I spent one night at Casita Carolina, Bacalar having read good reviews in my guide book. I found that the ownership had changed and it is now owned by a German man named Peter. I was a bit disappointed not to meet the original own who had started the place as she had sounded very interesting and involved hosting artwork shop weekends.
Casita Carolina’s facilities where as good as described though and we were very happy with our stay. It is what I would describe as a mature hostel with a variety of accommodation offer from campers, tents to room and fully contained suits. All this set right on the shore of Lake Bacalar. The really nice thing is the garden with its lawn that sweeps all the way to the water’s edge.
It is a peaceful, private place where you will find guests lounging in hammocks or sunbeds reading or just taking a nap. Occasionally going for a dip in the lake, or strolling up to town which is a short walk away.
This central location makes Casita Carolina a favorite spot for me. Everything is within easy walking distance. Apart from the town square and the castle which are central. A stole along the road that parallels the lake will reveal lots of little restaurants and public access points. This is also a bicycle friendly location.
There are several hostels and even a camp ground available in Bacalar. I will give another one a try next time. But I do recommend Casita Carolina – what you lose in a higher elevation view is made up for by the tranquil setting, clean facilities and private atmosphere.
